Molen Museum

We are staying at a farm in de Rijp. Just 7 kilometers up the dyke road is the town of Schermerhorn where there is a museum to educate about how windmills (molen) work and were used to drain the polders.

In the photo above, you can see some signs on the building that look like ocean waves. This represents N.A.P. - Normaal Amsterdams Pei. We’ve seen lots of references to this since it represents the official “sea level” line so how far you are below N.A.P. is something that the Dutch like to point out to visitors. The local Beemster Kaas factory has a water column in front of the building that shows we are about 3 meters below N.A.P.
