Rhine River Cruise–Marksburg Castle and Koblenz

After docking at Koblenz, the afternoon activity was a guided tour of Marksburg Castle.

This is the only castle on the Middle Rhine that was never destroyed in battle. Most of the castles have been destroyed by the French in the 1700-1800 time period. Of course, as our guide informed us, this isn’t because Marksburg is so well built or defended – it’s because it was never attacked.

At Koblenz, we docked within walking distance of the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), which includes a huge statue of Wilhelm I, the Kaiser who united the German medieval states into the modern German nation. We had plenty of time to wander the town
